Some more street style inspirations, this time from London Fashion Week.  Just like New York, there was a lot of fur, leather and layers.  We also saw a trend of blue.  Royal, navy, denim…whether it’s just a pop or the whole ensemble, it was all over the streets of London.  There was also a few sightings of polka dots!  Could this be the rebirth of the polka dot?  We’re not sold; but hey, you never know it might grow on us! What’s your opinion?  Have you always been a fan?

Hope this leaves you in a blue mood! ;)   K&A

This year was a little more challenging for us, as far as finding dresses we were madly in love with.  It was also the first time we slightly disagreed on some of the styles and our top picks.  Although we loved all the looks chosen, it wasn’t our most adored award season.  We did agree that Shailene Woodley was our favorite. We both fell in love with this 60′s inspired Valentino Couture dress, since we both love that era of fashion.  We thought that Sarah Jessica Parker’s ballet pink ball gown and leather jacket was an edgy choice that fit her amazing fashion sense and personality.  We even loved the white gloves…so Carrie Bradshaw!  We were smitten with Jenna Dewan’s teal dress because it was vibrant, young and the color pop from the earrings added a modern elegant look. Emma Stone’s black Alexander McQueen dress brought us back to the fifties.  We felt she was channeling Audrey Hepburn.  However, we thought bright red lips would have finished off that classic look.  What do you think?  Any favorites?

Until next year!  K&A

Furry Friday… Dog Fighting

ASPCA, dog fighting, furry friday, Stallone the bulldog, The Humane Society

We received an email on this very important issue and thought we should share some information into the scary world of dog fighting.  We thought it was a great way to educate ourselves and our readers.  The Humane society and ASPCA are fighting everyday to put an end to dog fighting and to urge our legislation to put forth harsher laws and penalties for those who are not only operating these horrific fights but also for those just spectating.  They have seen a decline in the large-scale dog fighting operations in the last decade, but there has been an increase in urban areas, neighborhoods and underground dog fights.

{Via}

The Humane Society of the United States is urging us to help close the gap in federal law to increase the penalties of animal fighting spectators. This includes all animals, hog-dog fighting and cockfighting. The spectators are the ones that are funding this horrible act.  If there were no spectators, there would be no fights.  It will only take a few minutes of your time to make a difference.  They are just asking us to make a quick phone call to your U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative to urge co-sponsorship.  Please click on this LINK and see just how easy it is.

The chart below is a ranking of state dog fighting laws.  It’s interesting to find out how your state stands on this issue.

 {Via}
The main reason people get involved in dog fighting is, of course, greed. Major dog fight raids have resulted in seizures of large amounts of money so you can imagine that there is nothing good about this environment and often involves other crimes including drug, alcohol and weapons violations as well as probation violations, corruption of minors and money laundering. Not to mention, arguments over dog fights have also resulted in incidents that have led to charges of assault and even homicide. THIS IS A PROBLEM!
{Via}
Below is a picture of Stallone. This is the face of dog fighting! Click on his picture to see a video of his story put together by the Humane Society. It’s graphic and heartbreaking but it’s important to know what’s going on.
Dogs who fight usually have their ears and tails clipped so that there is less for another dog to hold onto.  This is done by the owner, not by a Veterinarian. Dogs rarely get proper medical attention and suffer injuries including puncture wounds, lacerations, blood loss, crushing injuries and broken bones. Although fights are not usually to the death, many dogs die from their injuries later.
{Via}
The losing dog is often discarded with no treatment for their injuries or killed. If the losing dog has been an embarrassment to the reputation or status of its owner, it may be executed in a particularly brutal fashion as part of the “entertainment.”
{Via}
Ok, now that we are officially depressed…have a great Friday!  Please help with this issue, even if it’s just passing it along via Facebook or Twitter.  Have you done any good today?  Thanks for your help.  Have a happy weekend!!  K&A
How can you deny that face??

With the Academy Awards just around the corner we thought we would take a look back at some of our all time favorite red carpet and award show looks…

Starting with the talented Gwyneth Paltrow in this fairy tale pink gown. This dress got so much love and so much hate.  Although, she was compared to Grace Kelly and she was credited as bringing pink back into fashion.  I loved it! It was definitely the start of my love affair with pink, and Shakespeare in Love is one of my all time favorite movies, so this stands out to me as one of the most memorable Oscar moments.

Gwyneth Paltrow- Pink Ralph Lauren Gown, Oscars (1999)

Kate Hudson- Bohemian print Valentino Dress, Golden Globes (2003)

Ashley Olsen- Unknown. Mary-Kate- Bagley Mischka Dress, Met Institute Costume Gala (2006)

Mary-Kate- Black Feather Lily et Cie by Rita Watnick Dress, Alaia belt, Met Gala (2007)

Isabel Lucas- Coral Louis Vuitton Dress, Met Gala (2011)

Aren’t they stunning?  Michelle William’s yellow Oscar look is the epitome of Hollywood Glamour, from the red lips to the jewels.  Or how about Olivia! It doesn’t get anymore dreamy than this sparkling princess gown.  Every woman would love to have a Cinderella moment like that at least once in their life.  Right??  Since we love all things vintage we were smitten with Isabel’s 1920′s vibe in Louis Vuitton, which wouldn’t be complete without the ornate gold head-piece. As for our favorite, it was a toss-up between Mila in the lilac Ellie Saab or Mary-Kate in black feathers at the Met Gala.  Every detail of Mila’s lilac dress is absolutely elegant and combined with her sultry eyes make for a classic red carpet favorite….but, if we must pick one it would have to be Mary-Kate.  This raven colored gown is definitely a love it or hate it look…we happen to love it!  It’s so incredibly chic and daring.  Paired perfectly with the belt, tousled hair and smokey eyes make it our number one red carpet look of all time.  We would love to hear from you…which one is your favorite? Next week we will be sharing our picks from this season’s award shows.  Have a great Oscar night!

{Shirt: Free People // Shoes: Steve Madden // Bag: Urban Outfitters // Jeans: (Old) Gap}

Unfortunately Katie couldn’t join me on this one but do not fret, there will be more. I love the style of this Free People shirt.  Its 60′s vibe is making me want to rock bell bottoms and go to a music festival on a hot summer day.  I recently ordered these fringe boots from Steve Madden and have been dying to wear them. I am recovering from an Achilles rupture and am just recently able to wear heels again, so these were my first purchase. I love them…but have to admit I’m still getting used to them. They’re freaking tall! Yikes!

Awe…New York Fashion Week!  It’s the last day of NYFW 2012 and there are so many great images flooding the blogging world that we wanted to share just a few of our favorites. We love seeing street styles, especially during fashion week because there are so many individual looks…anything goes.  So eclectic…we love it!  If there is a trend, it’s definitely leather and fur (tons of fur! Enough to cause an outrage at PETA…if only it were all faux!)   Also, pops of neon and bright colors, classic all black and layers, layers, layers.  Seeing all these layers is making me yearn for cooler weather.  It’s tough living in sunny California!  No, seriously, I grew up with blistery winters so every once in a while I do miss having to bundle up on a cold day.  Wherever you are, we hope you are keeping warm and inspired.  K&A

color blocking, love, pink/red, Valentine's Day

Today is a day for being. Be with those you love, be kind to yourself. Be quiet and call forth the dream you buried long ago. -Sarah Ban Breathnach

{Katie-Jeans: American Eagle//Shirt: F21//Shoes: Steve Madden Andee-Shirt:H&M//Skirt:Thrifted//Shoes:Steve Madden}

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!  We hope everyone has a magical day planned with people they cherish most in life.  What a perfect day to celebrate our loved ones!  This day is also an excuse to truly get in touch with the girly girl in you and sport some pink!  This was super hard for Katie, but I talked her into to buying some pink pants (even though she cringed the whole way to the register).  Doesn’t she look cute!!??  I think they grew on her.  Here is our Valentine’s color blocking look we promised.  This is a great way to incorporate fun bright colors into your wardrobe and also take some fashion risks by adding feminine colors that may not be in your normal repertoire.  This was just a fun shoot we decided to do capturing the mood of Valentine’s Day.  It isn’t our normal go to, but we thought we’d have fun with the theme.

Have a lovely day!  K&A

Color blocking has been a trend we’ve been seeing a lot this past year and is carrying over into 2012.  It’s all about bright colors.  If you are anything like us you, tend to stick to the basic neutral shades.  Color blocking is a good way to explore color and really show your personality.  We love bright colors, but usually incorporate it into our wardrobe in small doses.  When working with this trend, colors in the same hue usually look great together; red/pink, fuchsia/orange, pink/purple.  While these feminine hues are our favorite ways to color block, there are other ways to rock this look, like the aqua/red look above seen at the New York Fashion Week Diane Von Furstenberg show.  This trend is here to stay through 2012 so have fun with it.  Bright colors will be great for spring/summer and more muted colors for fall.  If this it too much for you, start with adding bright pops of color through accessories or in pieces that have already color blocked for you like here and here.  However, the biggest tip for this trend is wearing it with complete confidence!  We decided to do our own version of color blocking…Valentine’s style!  We will be posting our look tomorrow.  K&A

Animal Shelter, Animals, domestic shorthair, East Valley Animal Shelter, furry friday, Pet Harbor

This post is closest to our hearts!  These are just a few of the animals featured on Pet Harbor, a website that reaches all across the United States allowing you to adopt and save an animal’s life.  These special faces are animals that are found here in L.A. in our local East Valley Animal Shelter.  Please help and support the local shelters in your area and pick adopting over buying a dog from a breeder or a pet store. There are so many animals that are euthanized everyday. We can all make a difference and give these precious souls a chance to have a wonderful life.  If you are interested in any of these furry friends click on their picture and it will take you to the website for adopting information and also to more pets that need loving homes.  Please let us know if you adopt one of these animals or if you adopt one through Pet Harbor; we would love to hear about it and feature you and your new friend here on Gypsy Luster.  Happy Friday!    K&A
