In honor of Women’s History month we thought we would discuss one of the easiest and most statement-making beauty transformations…wearing lipstick.   What better way to make a statement than the timeless crimson red?  Women have been wearing red lipstick for centuries and throughout the times red lipstick has spoken many languages.  In the 1920′s flapper girls dared to push the envelope!!  They sported the red shade to symbolize their independence and utra-feminine spirit.  In the 1930′s and 40′s this trend was quickly attributed to sex and prostitution and signified adult sexuality and womanhood.  Teen girls were discouraged from wearing it.  It wasn’t until the 1950′s that actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor brought back the dark red lips on the silver screen.  The rouge finally represented a more glamourous and accepted impression.  Thanks to all the women, past and present, that have had the bold confidence to be different and dramatic.

The great thing about red lipstick is how incredibly versatile it is….anyone can pull it off! Whether you are blond, brunette or red head, the color is striking.  It flatters every skin tone and any style. Day or night, dressy or casual, the color compliments!  The 2012 Fall runways and street fashionistas have been paying homage to Hollywood’s golden age by truly bringing back red this season.  We have fallen in love with a new ombre like trend we saw at the Nina Ricci Fall 12/13 show; it’s bright red lips with a slightly darker shade in the center.  What a perfect way to put a spin on the usual cherry red.  Combine that with a winged eye and you’ll be worthy of stepping into an Audrey Hepburn film.  One of our all time favorites is Mac’s Ruby Woo.

Around the 1950′s women were really coming into their own with their new found power at home and in the workplace, so women were seen with bright cherry red lips at all times of day and at any occasion.  This was an era of elegance and glamour.  If red lips have been a symbol of beauty, independence and glamour why don’t the women of today wear red lipstick more?  Are we scared to wear something so bold that says look at me?  Or have we gotten so comfortable that we have lost that classic elegance?  We think it might be a combination of both!  Red lips are a bold statement so why not wear them with pride.  During world war II lipstick was passed around the factories that woman worked in to help boost their moods.  We know we feel prettier when wearing red lips!   Checkout some of our favorite red lip looks below.
